6 Mother-Daughter Duos Who Have Appeared in Films Together (Video)

From Laura Dern to Gwyneth Paltrow, a number of actresses have followed in the footsteps of their famous mothers to Hollywood.

In honor of Mother’s Day, here’s a look at six real-life mothers and daughters who have appeared on the big screen together.

1. Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer

Mamie Gummer was just 3 years old when she made her film debut playing the role of Streep’s on-screen daughter in 1986’s Heartburn. Nearly three decades later, the pair will appear as mother and daughter again in the upcoming music drama Ricki and the Flash, slated for a June 2015 release.

2. Angelina Jolie and Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt

Jolie’s daughter Vivienne, one of six kids the actress shares with husband Brad Pitt, appeared as young Princess Aurora in Disney’s Maleficent. Jolie once noted that it took a family effort to get the 4-year-old to follow directions on her first day on set. Describing a scene in which Vivienne had to be filmed chasing butterflies in a field, Jolie told E! News, “Brad and I, and her brothers and sisters, were all there, and I had to get the pole with the blue stick on the end that was the butterfly and I had to kind of dance in front of her.”

3. Diane Ladd and Laura Dern

Ladd and daughter Laura Dern have appeared in a total of nine films together, including Wild at Heart, Citizen Ruth and Daddy and Them (though a few of Dern’s minor cameos in her mother’s earlier films were uncredited). Both mother and daughter earned Oscar nominations for best actress (Dern) and best supporting actress (Ladd) for their performance in 1991’s Rambling Rose.

4. Susan Sarandon and Eva Amurri Martino

Sarandon and Amurri Martino have starred alongside each other in seven films, ranging from 1992’s Bob Roberts to 2001’s The Banger Sisters, in which Amurri Martino played the role of Sarandon’s on-screen daughter. In both 1995’s Dead Man Walking and 2012’s That’s My Boy, Sarandon appeared as the older version of her daughter’s film character.

5. Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow

Danner and Paltrow had appeared in a TV movie together, 1992’s Cruel Doubt, before starring in their first feature film. In the 2003 biopic Sylvia, Paltrow played the lead role of Sylvia Plath, while Danner played the role of her mother, Aurelia Plath.

6. Leslie Mann and Maude and Iris Apatow

Mann’s real-life daughters Maude and Iris Apatow have played the on-screen daughters of Mann’s characters in 2007’s Knocked Up, 2009’s Funny People and 2012’s This Is 40 — all of which were directed by husband/father Judd Apatow.
