Arri is working with Imax to develop a digital camera to support the Imax format that would be based on the Arri 6K Alexa 65 camera system.
The Alexa 65, which is available exclusively through Arri Rental, also has grabbed the attention of Marvel. Plans are to use it to photograph the third installment of the Captain America franchise, Captain America: Civil War, after which Imax processing software will be used to get it ready for an Imax release.
Meanwhile Arri and Imax will work together to add additional hardware and software to the Alexa 65 technology to create a camera designed specifically for the Imax format.
Imax recently introduced a new laser projection-based theatrical system.
The Alexa 65 has dazzled many cinematographers since its introduction last fall. As previously reported in The Hollywood Reporter, two-time Oscar-winning director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, Birdman) is using it to shoot Alejandro G. Inarritu‘s The Revenant.
The camera also is being used for Oliver Stone’s Snowden and Yimou Zhang’s The Great Wall.
At NAB, Arri Rental is showing the Alexa 65 in the Arri booth, which also has Arri’s latest cameras, including the five-pound Alexa Mini.
Arri also introduced the SkyPanel, an LED soft light that will be available in two sizes. The first is scheduled for a September release.
