Natasha Parry, the London-born actress who played Lady Capulet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, an Oscar nominee for best picture, has died. She was 84.
Parry, the wife of British theater and film director Peter Brook, died after suffering a stroke while on vacation in La Baule, France, their daughter, Irina Brook, told the Telegraph newspaper.
Last year, Parry starred alongside Michel Piccoli in Thomas De Their’s warm The Taste of Blueberries as an elderly couple who wander through the woods and encounter a lifetime of memories, dreams and fears.
The daughter of director Gordon Parry (Tread Softly Stranger), Parry also appeared in such films as Windom’s Way (1957), opposite Peter Finch; Midnight Lace (1960), starring Doris Day and Rex Harrison; the musical Oh! What a Lovely War (1969), directed by Richard Attenborough; and Brook’s Meetings With Remarkable Men (1979).
She also performed for Brook in many of his stage productions, including King Lear in 1953. That play was seen by U.S. audiences as part of the series Omnibus, with Parry and Orson Welles starring.
She married Brook, now 90, in 1951. Their daughter is head of the National Drama Centre in Nice. The family has been based in France since the 1970s, the Telegraph noted.
