New Line has acquired the movie rights to The Raven Boys, the latest young-adult novel from The Scorpio Races author Maggie Stiefvater.
Akiva Goldsman is attached to produce via his Weed Road banner under its new partnership with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell and the duo’s Safehouse Pictures.
Scholastic is positioning the novel as one of the fall’s breakout YA titles.
The novel is the first of a four-book series and hits shelves next week. It centers on Blue, a 16-year-old from a family of psychics who has been told she will cause her true love to die. Avoiding boys was pretty easy when she was younger but harder now that she is beginning to find herself attracted to them, especially the rich prep school-going circle of teens known as the Raven Boys.
One of the boys is seeking the burial place of a Welsh noble who is said to be in deep slumber and whoever awakens him will be granted a favor. Blue and the boys’ destinies intertwine, love triangles pop up, and paranormal activity ensues.
No writer is attached.
The pickup puts New Line in the YA game, which at this stage has proved to be a financial boon for Summit (with The Twilight Saga) and Lionsgate (with The Hunger Games). And it comes with the notable author Stiefvater, a big name in that world who also is known for her romantic werewolf sage Shiver. With Shiver and Scorpio, the author has more than 2 million copies in print.
New Line’s Andrea Johnston and Dave Neustadter are overseeing.
Goldsman, who is known for his writing as well as producing, is in preproduction on Lone Survivor, the Pete Berg passion project centering on a true-life incident during the Afghanistan war that is due to start shooting in October.
Stiefvater is repped by WME and Laura Rennert at Andrea Brown Literary.
