Nicholas Hoult has enlisted in the Iraqi war drama Sand Castle.
The X-Men: First Class actor will star in the film that is based on true events. Mark Gordon will produce and Brit commercials director Seb Edwards, who has helmed spots for Nike, Adidas and the Red Cross, will make his feature debut with the film.
Sand Castle was written by Chris Roessner, Gordon’s former assistant. Roessner’s script cracked the 2012 Black List of top unproduced screenplays.
Gordon shepherded the project from its inception, which chronicles the story of Roessner’s two years and more than 200 missions as a machine gunner in Iraq’s Sunni Triangle. The story centers on Matt Ocre (Hoult) and the leader of his platoon, Sergeant Baker, as they attempt to protect Baqubah, a dangerous farming village.

The Mark Gordon Company is no stranger to war-themed films, having produced The Messenger and Saving Private Ryan as well as the TV series Army Wives. The company’s TV credits also include Grey’s Anatomy, Ray Donovan and Private Practice.
CAA, which reps Edwards and Roessner, is arranging financing for Sand Castle and will handle domestic rights.
Hoult, whose recent credits include Warm Bodies, will next will be seen in X-Men Days of Future Past. He also is onboard to star in the indie Kill Your Friends, Autobahn opposite Anthony Hopkins and Equals with Kristen Stewart.
Edwards, who started out as an actor, appearing in John Boorman‘s Hope & Glory at the age of 8, made a name for himself as an in-demand commercials director. He also helmed the short Friday, which was nominated for a British Independent Film Award.
Hoult is repped by UTA and 42 in the U.K.
Edwards additionally is handled by Bloom Hergott and Independent Talent in the U.K.
Roessner also is represented by Management 360 and Ziffren Brittenham.
