Nicole Kidman admitted that 2014 has not been her “favorite year,” both professionally and personally, following the death of her father, Anthony Kidman, from a heart attack in August.
The Guardian reported that Kidman made the admission at the Australian premiere of Paddington in Sydney on Sunday. “Personally [it’s been] really, really, really hard,” she said. “My family underwent a massive tragedy. So not my favorite year. But I try not to be ungrateful — I’m grateful to be alive.”
Kidman said she would be spending more time in Sydney with her mother and sister after losing her father. “We’ve gone through a really tough time this year as a family. It’s so nice to be able to take care of each other.”

On the big screen, Kidman’s year has been mixed, with Grace of Monaco widely panned, The Railway Man receiving muted praise and Before I Go to Sleep also dividing critics and stalling at the box office.
Paddington, however, has been a critical and commercial success thus far, and Kidman acknowledged the up and down nature of not just 2014 but her career. “My whole career is always a roller-coaster,” she told The Guardian, adding, “I’m so random and spontaneous and unusual in my choices — I never expect anything.”
Kidman, who plays the villain in Paddington, also spoke about why she took the role. “I just wanted to make a film for my kids. … I hadn’t made a film that had made people feel good for a long time. I’ve made films that are darker in tone. So it’s really nice to be able to make a film where you can say ‘Yeah, bring your kids.’ “
