Antony Kidman, the father of actress Nicole Kidman, died after a fall in his hotel in Singapore while visiting his daughter Antonia, according to The Australian Women’s Weekly, a magazine for which the noted psychologist often penned columns.
The Oscar winner’s father was beloved in Australia as a psychologist who often could be heard on the radio and wrote columns offering advice on everyday life. He was visiting Kidman’s sister, Antonia, who lives in Singapore with her husband and six children. He took a fall after breakfast, according to media reports.
It is unclear when he died, but Singapore police told Reuters on Friday they were investigating the “unnatural death” of a man in his 80s. In Singapore, “unnatural death” refers to falls or other accidents.
“Nicole and her family are in shock by the sudden death of her father,” Kidman’s rep tells THR in a statement. “She appreciates the outpouring of support and kindly requests privacy during this very difficult time. Thank you.”
Dr. Kidman was a clinical psychologist at the University of Technology, Sydney. “During his 43 years at the University of Technology, Sydney, Tony has contributed greatly — as a colleague, as a researcher and as a health practitioner,” UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said in a statement obtained by Reuters. “Tony will be missed by all at UTS. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
According to his UTS bio, Dr. Kidman, had “been carrying out scientific research and lecturing for more than 30 years and conducting a clinical practice for 25 years. As a biologist and clinical psychologist, his initial research was in the field of the brain and nervous system. In 1985, he commenced research into some of the biological and psychological aspects of cancer.” In 2005, he was awarded an Order of Australia medal.
Nicole Kidman was reportedly in Nashville at the time of his death. Her husband, Keith Urban, was scheduled to play at a charity event in Los Angeles at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks on Thursday night but canceled at the last minute to fly back to Nicole, according to TMZ.
