The first trailer for The Oath was released on Friday (Aug. 17).
In addition to starring in and writing the film, The Oath marks Barinholtz’s directorial debut. The film also stars John Cho, Carrie Brownstein, Billy Magnussen, Meredith Hagner, Jon Barinholtz, Nora Dunn and Chris Ellis.
The trailer begins with Chris (Barinholtz) and Kai (Haddish) praying for the strength to make it through the upcoming days.
They are later seen watching the news, which explains the government’s initiative to have Americans sign the Patriots’ Oath. The new oath states citizen’s loyalty to the president, which progressive Chris is outspokenly against. The topic is on everyone’s mind as the deadline to sign the oath quickly approaches, which causes friction between the politically diverse family.
“This is not the America that I know,” Chris said. Alice (Brownstein) then reminds Chris that they agreed not to discuss politics at the upcoming family dinner. “I’m not gonna ruin Thanksgiving. I promise,” he said.
Chris is later seen at the Thanksgiving dinner calling his guests Nazis. It’s soon revealed that Hagner’s character shares the opposing political views of Chris and shouts that all liberals “call everyone a Nazi” after being triggered.
Guns, knives and tasers are eventually pulled out as the family members and government agents break out into a physical fight. When an injured guest falls to the ground, Kai shouts, “My house, bitch!”
“I want to just one more time say I’m really sorry that you got tased,” Chris tells Kai at the conclusion of the trailer. She responds, “I don’t know if it’s because there’s still electricity in my body, but I am freaking out.”
The Oath is set to debut in select theaters on Oct. 12. Watch the full trailer below.
