MOSCOW — The fourth edition of the Odessa International Film Festival (OIFF), which has emerged as Ukraine’s main film event, will kick off in the Black Sea port city on July 12.
Twelve films are to be screened as part of the festival’s international competition. Among the highlights are the action thriller The Liability, directed by the U.K.’s Craig Viveiros and starring Tim Roth; Paradjanov, a biopic on renowned Soviet-time director Sergei Paradjanov, co-directed by Serge Avedikian and Olena Fetisova and co-produced by Ukraine, France, Armenia and Georgia; The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, the debut feature by U.S. director Fredrik Bond; and Geograf Globus Propil (Geographer Drank His Globe Away) by Russia’s Alexander Veledinsky, which recently won the top prize at Russia’s main national film festival Kinotavr.
In addition to the main award of the international competition, the festival also awards prizes to the best Ukrainian feature and short film.
OIFF’s non-competition programs will include Gala Premieres, Festival of Festivals and retrospectives of Paradjanov and British director Michael Winterbottom.
The Gala Premieres section, which aims to introduce major new international films to Ukrainian audiences, features, among others, James Franco’s As I Lay Dying; Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight; Camille Claudel, 1915 by French director Bruno Dumont and Michel Gondry’s Mood Indigo, co-produced by France and Belgium.
Several major international film personalities are giving master classes this year, including Serbian director Emir Kusturica, U.S. director-producer Roger Corman and Austrian director Ulrich Seidl.
Film Industry Office, the festival’s professional program, is to feature presentations, panel discussions, round tables and pitchings, aiming to serve as a communication platform for Ukrainian and international filmmakers and to foster international cooperation between Ukraine and other countries.
