Having visited post-apocalyptic wastelands and a galaxy far, far away, screenwriter Gary Whitta has a new destination for his latest project: comic books. Whitta is teaming with The Boys co-creator Darick Robertson for Oliver, a new retelling of Oliver Twist launching from Image Comics next year.
The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Book of Eli writer is working with comics veteran Robertson on the series, which revisits the classic Charles Dickens story, re-creating the main character into what Image describes as “a post-apocalyptic superhero fighting to liberate a war-ravaged England while searching for the truth about his own mysterious origins.”
In a statement from the publisher, Whitta said that the series has “been more than 15 years in the making, so it’s a particular thrill to finally see it on its way to a comics store near you, and at a time when it feels more relevant than ever.”
Describing Oliver as a “long labor of love,” Robertson added that the book “is the essence of what brings me passion for comics and visual storytelling. … For me, this is what indie comics are all about. I am thrilled to have it scheduled for its January launch at long last.”
Oliver is set to bow Jan. 23.
