Whether you’re donning cocktail attire or the best ugly Christmas sweater ever, how about adding a little latex to your next holiday party? Olivia Palermo’s pretty-meets-edgy hairstyle — created for “An Evening Honoring Valentino” at the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund Gala in New York on Monday — is the perfect accompaniment.

Hairstylist Lacy Redway says, because Palermo was wearing a romantic Valentino gown, “I wanted to completely offset that with an edginess of latex and the severity of a super-sleek, shiny rope braid.” To begin with, the stylist (who also works with Lupita Nyong’o and Jourdan Dunn) parted Palermo’s hair in the center and used a little R+Co Chiffon Styling Mousse ($27) with a paddle brush to smooth it down. “To eliminate all flyaways, I added Moco De Gorila Punk Squizz Hair Gel ($3) onto the hair.”
To create the low ponytail, Redway used an Ibiza GL7 hairbrush and secured it with a bungee, then she wrapped a small piece of latex fabric around the base. Next came the larger piece of latex, which she cut to act as a headband and “really accent the ponytail. I just tied it in a knot at the nape,” she says. Finally, she created a rope braid in Palermo’s ponytail, using a little more gel and twisting two sections of the pony all the way down to the ends, which she secured with an elastic. Voila — edgy and pretty.
