The year’s highly anticipated September covers are starting to debut, and Olivia Wilde’s Glamour cover was one of the first to be revealed. As part of the Conde Nast glossy’s cover shoot, the 30-year-old starlet was photographed breastfeeding her son, Otis, who was born to Wilde and fiancé Jason Sudeikis this April.

We’re coming off the summer of the Free the Nipple campaign (thanks, Scout Willis and Rihanna), not to mention Time magazine’s notorious 2012 breastfeeding cover, so a shot of Wilde nursing her naked newborn is hardly head-turning at this point. “Being shot with Otis is so perfect, because any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother being a part of that. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing,” said Wilde of the portrait, which was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier.
What is striking, however, is the unrealistic, impractical outfit that the perfectly coiffed Wilde dons in a diner for the shot: a feathered Roberto Cavalli dress, Prada heels and scarf, Yossi Harari earrings and a Lanvin ring. To her credit, Wilde is quick to assert that this isn’t her average nursing attire. “I certainly don’t really look like that when I’m breastfeeding,” she says. Does anyone?

We’re all for women’s liberation and the idea of real women doing real things in magazines, but in this situation, Glamour seems to have turned a typically raw, beautiful moment into something that just looks like a generic, grocery store-aisle magazine photo. Perhaps we expect too much, but we would have loved to see actual boldness and opinion here.
What do you think of the photo?
