The first trailer for IFC Films’ Ophelia was released on Tuesday afternoon.
As a retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, director Clair McCarthy put a new twist on the well-known narrative. Daisy Ridley stars as Ophelia, the heroine who captures the heart of Prince Hamlet (George MacKay) and ultimately stirs up conflict in the castle in which she lives. As Ophelia begins to find herself in danger, Queen Gertrude (Naomi Watts) starts to question Ophelia’s motives and allegiance.
Though the classic tale originally focused on the character of Hamlet and ended with Ophelia drowning herself in a river, McCarthy’s vision allows audiences to see the story through the eyes of a valiant yet flawed leader.
The upcoming film also stars Tom Felton, Clive Owen and Sebastian De Souza.
Ophelia will be Ridley’s latest onscreen role since her most recent appearance in the Star Wars saga, while Watts recently wrapped her newest movie Boss Level, which is set for release later this year.
Ophelia is set to be released June 28.
