The news Monday night that Oscar de la Renta died at 82, following a long battle with cancer, left many of his Hollywood fans and fashion industry insiders mourning the loss of the legendary designer.
“He died exactly as he lived: with tremendous grace, great dignity and very much on his own terms,” said stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband, Alex Bolen, in a company statement. “Oscar’s hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company. All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar’s example, we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much.”
A joint statement from Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky, read: “His singular talent and exquisite taste elevated American fashion, and his warmth and friendship will be missed by our family and all whose lives he touched in his extraordinary journey. Oscar’s remarkable eye was matched only by his generous heart. His legacy of philanthropy extended from children in his home country who now have access to education and healthcare, to some of New York’s finest artists whose creativity has been sustained through his support. We will always be grateful to Oscar for the love he showed us, and for sharing his talent on some of the most important occasions of our lives. And we will never forget the joy, adventure, and beauty we shared with Oscar, his beloved wife, Annette, and their family during our many happy times together, especially those spent in his beloved Dominican Republic.”

Reacting to the designer’s death, Hollywood philanthropist Barbara Davis told The Hollywood Reporter: “I feel terrible; everything I wear is from him. He was the sweetest man. He had a flair about him that was more wonderful than any designer I’ve ever know. My daughters wore Oscar; my grandchildren have children’s Oscar, even my mother-in-law wore Oscar. It’s like losing a member of the family.”
Others taking to social media to remember de la Renta included Taylor Swift, Nina Garcia, Rose McGowan, Christian Siriano, New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman, Gloria Estefan, Padma Lakshmi and Bethenny Frankel, who wrote that she was saving one of his dresses for four years to wear to a special event.
