U.K. comedy Pride was the big winner at the British Independent Film Awards, held in London on Sunday evening.
At a glittering event hosted by Simon Bird, star of this 2014’s biggest U.K. film The Inbetweeners 2, Pride took home the best British independent film award, along with best supporting actor and actress prizes for its stars Andrew Scott and Imelda Staunton, respectively.

From nine nominations, Irish thriller ’71 won best director for Yann Demange on his debut feature. Best actor went to Brendan Gleeson for his turn as a trouble priest in Calvary, while newcomer Gugu Mbatha-Raw took best actress for her breakthrough role as an 18th century aristocrat in Amma Asante’s Belle.
Expected Oscar contender The Imitation Game, which was up for four awards including best film, best actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and best actress for Keira Knightley, came away empty handed.
A bumper crop of talent from the U.K. was present, including Cumberbatch, Knightley, Timothy Spall, Emma Thompson, Rafe Spall, Mark Strong, Asa Butterfield and Helen Mirren. Mirren described the awards as the “beating heart of the British film industry.”
