Cannes regular Pedro Almodovar won't be in this year's competition, but this comedy from Argentine director Damian Szifron could be the next best thing. Almodovar is one of the producers of the feature, a series of comic sketches that should provide some welcome laughs amid Cannes' typically grim selection of political and social dramas. Wild Tales marks Szifron's first appearance in Cannes. (Sales: Film Factory)

Damian Szifron‘s acclaimed dark comedy Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes) has been selected as the opening-night film for the 32nd edition of the Miami International Film Festival.
Produced by Pedro Almodovar (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), the Spain-Argentina co-production made the Oscar shortlist of nine titles vying for best foreign-language picture. A record-breaking 83 international pictures were submitted for the category. Among the favorites are Wild Tales, Poland’s Ida and Russia’s Golden Globe winner Leviathan.
Oscar nominees will be announced early Thursday.
Wild Tales had its world premiere at Cannes, where it was picked up for North American distribution by Sony Pictures Classics, while Warner Bros. nabbed rights to Latin America, France and Spain.
The film, from Argentine writer-director Szifron, turns on six thematically connected stories told with a uniquely subversive sense of humor.
The Miami film fest, which showcases Ibero-American cinema, runs March 6-15. The festival will announce its full program on Jan. 27.
