Despite airing on the Disney-owned ABC, the Oscars coincidentally didn’t reward the Disney-distributed latest installment in the Star Wars franchise. The Force Awakens went into Sunday night’s show with five nominations but went home empty-handed despite experts predicting the box-office phenomenon would at least win in the category of best visual effects, an award that went to Ex Machina.
Still, the Oscars telecast did feature a cute bit with some of the franchise’s most famous droids: C-3PO, R2-D2 and BB-8.
Carol was another multiple nominee that was winless at the Oscars, continuing a disappointing awards season trend for the Todd Haynes-directed 1950s-set lesbian love story, which earned several nominations but no wins at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and BAFTAs. At Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards, Carol won only one of its six nominations, the most of any film. Carol had six Oscar nominations but failed to win in any of the categories for which it was up for awards.
Another somewhat surprising shutout is The Martian, the box-office powerhouse with a stellar cast and Ridley Scott at the helm scored seven nominations and at one point was a favorite to win best picture. But going into Oscar weekend, none of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Oscars experts predicted that the film would win any awards.
Steve Jobs also failed to win either of the two awards for which it was nominated, for stars Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet. While Leonardo DiCaprio was the favorite to win in Fassbender’s category of best actor, Winslet was in a close race with Alicia Vikander for best supporting actress. While THR‘s awards analyst Scott Feinberg correctly predicted that Vikander would win, THR‘s chief film critic Todd McCarthy argued that Winslet should win. And math-based Oscar prognosticater Ben Zauzmer said the two women were in a close race.
Meanwhile, Sylvester Stallone and Lady Gaga both surprisingly lost Oscars they were favored to win, with Stallone the favorite in the best supporting actor category and Gaga the favorite to win best original song. Instead, Mark Rylance and Sam Smith won those categories, respectively.
Still, Rylance’s win was the only one for Bridge of Spies, despite its six nominations.
Other one-time winners were Room, The Danish Girl and The Big Short, which only won the Oscar for adapted screenplay despite recently being considered to be in a close race with Spotlight for best picture.
But leading up to the Oscars, both Feinberg and Zauzmer predicted that The Revenant would win the top prize of best picture, with the latter pointing out that it was twice as likely to emerge victorious. And even though the Alejandro G. Inarritu-directed survival drama won three awards, including star Leonardo DiCaprio’s first Oscar, it was nominated for 12 awards, so it could have won more.
