Oscar Winner’s Controversial ‘Don Juans’ to Screen at Czech That Film Fest at USC

The third annual Czech That Film Fest, at USC School of Cinematic Arts, features the controversial 2014 Oscar submission Don Juans, by 1968 Oscar-winning Closely Watched Trains director Ji?í Menzel, March 28 at 7 pm.

The film, about a small-town opera company, was submitted after Agnieska Holland’s more-buzzed HBO film about Polish martyr Jan Palach, Burning Bush, was ruled ineligible by the Academy.

“It’s not a heavy social drama, but an intellectual comedy,” says Michal Sedlá?e, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles. “Ji?í can make you laugh and think at the same time.”

The festival, organized by the Los Angeles Czech Consulate and Czech Center New York in cooperation with USC, also features Mlian Cieslar‘s love story from Auschwitz, Collette (2013), Zdenek Tyc‘s Like Never Before, and the world premiere of Lousy Bastards, the debut feature by Roman Kašparovský, who will do a Q&A. 2000 Oscar nominee Jan H?ebejk presented his popular Honeymoon on March 27. The fest continues through Apr. 2, then travels to Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Portland, Salt Lake City, and Cedar Rapids.
