This year’s Oscars will pay tribute to a trio of movie musicals: Les Miserables, Chicago and Dreamgirls.
“The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade,” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said Friday in a statement.
Les Mis is nominated for eight Oscars including best picture, best actor (Hugh Jackman) and best supporting actress (Anne Hathaway).
The 2002 big-screen adaptation of Chicago directed by Rob Marshall picked up six trophies including best pictures and best supporting actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Dreamgirls (2006), helmed by Bill Condon, won Jennifer Hudson a supporting actress Oscar for her role as Effie in the Supremes-inspired musical.
