Eddie Redmayne took home the Academy Award for best actor for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
Cate Blanchett — last year’s winner for best actress for her role in Woody Allen‘s Blue Jasmine — presented the award to Redmayne, who beat out Benedict Cumberbatch, Bradley Cooper, Michael Keaton and Steve Carell to take home the Oscar.
During his acceptance speech, Redmayne dedicated his award to “those people around the world battling ALS,” the disease that afflicted Hawking. The overwhelmed actor thanked the cast and crew of the film, including co-star and best actress nominee Felicity Jones.
Redmayne ended his speech thanking his wife, saying, “I want to thank Hannah, my wife. I love you. We have a new fellow coming to share our apartment.”
At last year’s awards show, Matthew McConaughey took home the honor for his work in Dallas Buyers Club.
Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the 87th Annual Academy Awards, which is being broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
