So long nude (and red for that matter): purple reigns as the statement lip color of the Oscars. Varying shades of dark raisin-brown to dramatic berry-purple have shown up on the pouts of Naomi Watts, Behati Prinsloo, Chrissy Teigen and Lorelei Linklater. Julianne Moore also has a blotted-down version of a dark purple lip, which reads more like a subtle stain — a striking contrast to her fair skin and white Chanel gown.

The dramatic departure from the nude lips (and smoky eyes) we’ve been seeing all awards season is a refreshing change and adds a slightly edgier touch to traditional red-carpet fare. Also, purple-toned lip color provides the perfect juxtaposition to the palette of silver and white gowns canvassing the carpet this evening.
