“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights,” said Arquette. “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America!”
Meryl Streep‘s reaction was a highlight of the night:
At the Oscar afterparties, many people praised Arquette’s speech while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter.
Here’s what they had to say, courtesy of THR‘s party diary.
Elton John’s Oscar Party
Rose McGowan: “Patricia Arquette used her power for good in the world. Women of every race, color and creed are represented in this industry, and it’s time that we are rewarded for our fight. We need her, and she spoke for us.”
Tia Mowry: “I love how she used the Oscars as a podium to speak for an amazing movement. I thought it was important and right on time. I hope we do see change. I admire her courage.”
Eric McCormack on his favorite moment of the night: “I liked Patricia Arquette’s speech.”
Robin Tunney: “She’s so amazing, and it’s true about the pay. And my favorite part was Meryl Streep backing her up! Also I love that she writes her speeches down and puts on glasses, because she isn’t trying to be cool, and she doesn’t want to forget anyone.”
Twice-nominated director Lucy Walker (for documentary and documentary short) was celebrating Patricia Arquette’s speech, Meryl Streep’s reaction and #AskHerMore. She recalled an interview with The New York Times the year she was nominated for Waste Land. All of the other directors were men, and all were quoted on their films. She spoke about her work but was quoted only on her Oscar dress plans. “I enjoy fashion; I’m happy to talk about it but not to the exclusion of my work,” Walker said.
