‘American Sniper’ and ‘Whiplash’: Oscar Winners Predicted on Facebook

Of the eight films vying for the best picture Oscar, the title that’s most fit to win is American Sniper — according to Facebook users.

The social media platform announced on Thursday that the Bradley Cooper starrer has been the most mentioned film in the category over the past two weeks, followed by Selma, Birdman, The Imitation Game, Boyhood, Whiplash, The Theory of Everything and The Grand Budapest Hotel. (It’s a pick that differs from the nationwide chatter on Twitter, which places Selma on top.)

Additionally, users can’t stop talking about Cooper — who is coming out ahead in the best actor race over Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch and Steve Carell (in that order) — or Whiplash‘s J.K. Simmons in the best supporting actor category over Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Robert Duvall and Mark Ruffalo.

Other predicted winners for Sunday’s ceremony, according to Facebook mentions over the past two weeks, is Still Alice star Julianne Moore for best actress — over Reese Witherspoon, Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike and Marion Cotillard — as well as Into the Woods‘ Meryl Streep for best supporting actress, over Patricia Arquette, Emma Stone, Keira Knightley and Laura Dern.

And of the nominated directors, Facebook users favor Boyhood‘s Richard Linklater, while Big Hero 6 is the platform’s frontrunner for best animated film.
