AP ImagesWhile looking at Sunday’s Oscar arrivals, we saw two major trends: the black brigade (Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Anna Kendrick and Olivia Wilde) and the pale brigade — ladies in pale blush or caramel shade gowns with details such as encrusted stone sequins and shiny beads that made them come alive with light.

Cate Blanchett — certainly in one of the most memorable gowns of the night (no surprise there!) — wore a custom Armani Prive gown so pale it appeared she might be nude. The dress featured short, sheer sleeves and a full skirt, but the dress’ amazingness stemmed from its beaded embroidery, with an array of shine hanging from the light, sheer fabric. “It’s heavy,” Blanchett told Ryan Seacrest. It was well well worth it, especially with her hair in 1940s movie-star waves and heavy diamond ball earrings.
Jessica Biel showed her fashion cache in a Chanel couture pale blush strapless column, also covered in silver crystal beading. It was a simple cut on amazing fabric. Sarah Paulson followed suit, in a blush gown with silver crystals.

Sally Hawkins, Blanchett’s co-star in Blue Jasmine, wore a cafe au lait-color Valentino gown with sleeves, featuring plenty of embroidery.
These gowns showed up on the red carpet one after the other, making us wonder, “Why are these ladies all wearing the same thing?” Why? Because great designers think alike, that’s why.
