Predictions be damned. Last year, the Oscars were all about glitz, shine and beads, with red-carpet gowns both spectacular and over-the-top — but, in 2014, the Oscars has gone somewhat restrained.
The low-key black look at this year’s ceremony makes sense, as the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and the Critics Choice Awards have shown so much fashion extravagance that the Oscars were very likely to go stately, understated and absolutely classic. Perhaps underwhelming, but timeless — maybe the way the Oscars should be.

Charlize Theron stepped out in a stately yet low-key Dior gown that was essentially a sheath. However, with the addition of sheer straps and a very specific cut at the bustier, it made the gown look entirely new. Sheer straps — watch that trend explode.
Olivia Wilde, who arrived with fiance Jason Sudeikis, wore an elegant Valentino high-necked simple black gown. It was sleeveless with a slim-cut over her pregnant body and a white strip down the back. With her hair up, she was the picture of clean, simple refinement.
Anna Kendrick — going full fashion gamut at New York fashion week recently — wore a dress from one of the many shows she saw: J. Mendel. It was black, but included illusion details and strips for a silky and dramatic effect. The silhouette, so far, is pretty close to the body, but still fluid. Idina Menzel also arrived in black.
