“See You Again,” the hit song and emotional Paul Walker tribute by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth on the Furious 7 soundtrack, was notably left out of the Oscar race as it failed to land a nomination.
This year’s Oscar mentions for best song include “Earned It” (Fifty Shades of Grey), “Manta Ray” (Racing Extinction), “Simple Song #3” (Youth), “Til It Happens to You” (The Hunting Ground) and “Writing’s on the Wall” (Spectre). The last hip-hop song to win the coveted golden statuette was Three 6 Mafia for “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp.”
“See You Again” shattered records, proving that the Walker farewell song had gone mainstream and stuck with audiences. According to Billboard, “See You Again” is the first hip-hop video to hit one billion YouTube views and broke the Spotify record for most streams in a single day.
The tune has, however, received awards action elsewhere with one Golden Globe nomination and three Grammy nominations. The Roots’ Questlove tweeted his shock of the Oscar snub, writing, “I woulda bet the farm that @wizkhalifa was taking that statue home for “See You Again”. Guess they told me huh? #Oscars “
