Beta CinemaCOLOGNE, Germany – Two Lives, a historic drama from director Georg Maas starring Juliane Kohler and Liv Ullmann, will be Germany’s official entry in the race for the 2014 Oscar for best foreign language film.
The drama tells the true story of Kathrine Evensen (Kohler), a German woman raised in East Germany who lives in Norway, the child of a Norwegian woman (Liv Ullmann) and a German WWII solider. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, Kathrine’s secret past, including her involvement with the East German Stasi, comes to light, threatening the life of lies she has built up with her family.

Dieter Zeppenfeld of Zinnober Film and Rudi Teichmann of B&T Film produced the German-Norwegian co-production together with Oslo-based Helgeland Film in cooperation with Degeto Film, ApolloMedia and the Norwegian investor FUZZ.
Nordisk Film bowed Two Lives in Norway and Denmark last year and the film screened in Cannes in May. It goes out in Germany Sept. 19 through distributor Farbfilm and in France early next year through Sophie Dulac Distribution. Germany’s Beta Cinema is handling worldwide sales.
Two Lives was picked as Germany’s Oscar candidate by an nine-person independent jury appointed by national film promotion body German Films.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five foreign language nominees Jan. 16. The 86th Academy Awards take place March 2, 2014.
