Lithuania has selected Šerkšnas (Frost), directed by Sarunas Bartas, for best foreign-language film Oscar consideration.
The drama, which had its world premiere in May in the Director’s Fortnight section at Cannes, follows a young Lithuanian couple on a road trip from the Baltics to Ukraine’s war-torn Donbass region.
Frost was co-produced by Lithuania, France, Ukraine and Poland and features Vanessa Paradis alongside Lithuanian actors Mantas Janciauskas and Lyja Maknaviciute and Poland’s Andrzej Chyra.
Studija Kinema, KinoElektron, Insight Media/Tato Film, Donten & Lacroix Films, KNM and Reborn Production are the film’s production companies, and Luxbox handles sales.
Bartas, who previously helmed Freedom and Three Days, is one of Lithuania’s best-known directors on an international scale.
Frost is Lithuania’s tenth foreign-language Oscar submission since the country became independent in 1991. A Lithuanian film has never earned an Academy Award nomination.
