The National, Chris Cornell, Melissa Manchester and Mary J. Blige are among the acts shortlisted for the original song Oscar.
Thirty-nine tunes were selected in all, and now move on to the next elimination round.
The National’s “Think You Can Wait” appeared in the Tom McCarthy drama Win-Win; Cornell’s “The Keeper” was featured in Machine Gun Preacher; Manchester’s “Rainbird” took flight in indie Dirty Girl; and Blige’s “The Living Proof” was heard in The Help.

Animated films were well represented in the group of 39, which was announced Monday. Two songs from Happy Feet Two, three tunes from The Muppets, three songs from Rio, and two tunes from Winnie the Pooh made the list. Gnomeo & Juliet’s “Hello Hello” and “Love Builds a Garden” — both written by Elton John — also made the cut.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will screen clips featuring each song in random order for voting members of the Music Branch on Jan. 5. Members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting.
A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film.
The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced Jan. 24.
