AP Images(4)Ellen Degeneres may throw in a song and dance during her Academy Awards opening number, but Sunday evening’s most anticipated performers are pulled straight from the radio charts.
Idina Menzel: Oscar Performance 2014
Once again, the best original song nominees are set to take Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre stage. Pharrell Williams will perform “Happy” from Despicable Me 2, U2 will sing “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Karen O will perform “The Moon Song” from Her (alongside Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig) and Idina Menzel will sing “Let It Go” from Frozen, written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Pharrell: Oscar Performance 2014
Also set to take the Oscars stage — for the first time — is Bette Midler. Additionally, Pink has been announced to make a special appearance, and performed during the tribute to The Wizard of Oz.
Among the presenters at the event are Christoph Waltz, Angelina Jolie, Will Smith, John Travolta, Daniel Day-Lewis, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence.
Karen O: Oscar Performance 2014
To celebrate the Oscars’ other music category in full force, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its first-ever Oscars Concert on Thursday night, inaugurating what it hopes becomes an annual tradition with performances by the best original score nominees.
Alexandre Desplat (Philomena), Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks), Steven Price (Gravity), John Williams (The Book Thief) and Arcade Fire’s William Butler and Owen Pullett were on hand to introduce and conduct a suite of their score — with the exception of Price, whose suite was conducted by Joseph Trapanese so Price to listen to his music played by a full orchestra for the first time.
The Oscars Concert also featured alternate performances of original song nominees. Frozen’s husband-and-wife composers belted out “Let It Go,” Jill Scott stepped in for Williams on “Happy,” Cristin Milioti sang Karen O’s “The Moon Song” and Voice alum Matt Cermanski handled U2’s “Ordinary Love.”
