The Judge star, 84, became the oldest supporting actor nominee ever.
He surpassed Hal Holbrook, who at 82 years, 339 days was nominated for Into the Wild in 2007.
Other octogenarians who have been nominated for best supporting actor include Max von Sydow for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in 2011 (age 82), Ralph Richardson for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes in 1984 (age 82) and Christopher Plummer, who was nominated for The Last Station in 2009 (age 80) and again for Beginners in 2011 (age 82). Plummer won for the latter, making him the oldest winner in any acting category.
This marks Duvall’s seventh Oscar nomination overall; he won in 1984 for best actor for Tender Mercies.
