The Oscar nominations are in. Here’s additional background about some of the crafts nominations:
There are several double nominees this year: Skip Lievsay is a sound mixing nominee for both Gravity and Inside Llewyn Davis; Chris Munro is a sound mixing nominee for Captain Phillips and Gravity; and Catherine Martin is nominated for both production and costume design for The Great Gatsby.
These are the fifth and sixth nominations for Lievsay; the third for Munro, who won an Oscar for Black Hawk Down; and the fifth and sixth nominations for Martin, who previously won both of her categories for Moulin Rouge.
Some veteran directors of photography were cited in the cinematography category. Prisoners was the 11th Oscar nomination for Roger Deakins, whose prior nominations include Skyfall, No Country for Old Men and The Shawshank Redemption. Gravity marked the sixth nomination for Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, whose prior nominations include Children of Men, The Tree of Life and Sleepy Hollow. And Inside Llewyn Davis’ director of photography, Bruno Delbonnel, earned his fourth nomination, with prior nominations including Amelie, A Very Long Engagement, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. This year’s cinematography category is rounded out by first-time nominees Phedon Papamichael for Nebraska and Philippe Le Sourd for The Grandmaster.
Nominees in editing are Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers and Alan Baumgarten for American Hustle; Christopher Rouse for Captain Phillips; John Mac McMurphy and Martin Pensa for Dallas Buyers Club; director Alfonso Cuaron and Mark Sanger for Gravity; and Joe Walker for 12 Years a Slave. All but Dallas Buyers Club are nominated for American Cinema Editors’s Eddie Awards. American Hustle is nominated for an Eddie for best edited feature/comedy or musical. The rest are nominated for best edited dramatic feature. In nine of the past 11 ACE Awards, the winner of the best edited dramatic feature category has gone on to win the Oscar in editing. Once in that time frame, it went to the winner in the comedy or musical category.
Of the VFX nominees: Gravity’s lead VFX house was London’s Framestore; Industrial Light + Magic was the lead VFX house for Star Trek Into Darkness and The Lone Ranger; The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was led by Weta Digital; and Weta and Digital Domain share top VFX billing on nominee Iron Man 3. The nominees were selected by the VFX branch of the Academy after a bake-off, during which presentations are made about 10 shortlisted films. The five that were shortlisted but didn’t make the final five were Elysium, Oblivion, Pacific Rim, Thor: The Dark World, and World War Z.
