Oscilloscope, Showtime Acquire Jim Whitaker’s 9/11 Documentary

Oscilloscope Laboratories and Showtime have acquired Jim Whitaker’s documentary Rebirth, which follows the lives of 10 people who were affected by the events of 9/11 over the past 10 years.

The doc, which debuted at January’s Sundance Film Festival, also uses time-lapse photography to show how the space where the Twin Towers once stood has changed during the same period.

Oscilloscope will release Rebirth theatrically in August, and it will then premiere on Showtime on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The film, as well as other original material created by the Rebirth team, will eventually be housed at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum located at Ground Zero. All proceeds from Rebirth will go to the Project Rebirth Center to develop and provide new multimedia tools to aid therapists, academics, first responders and others working with people dealing with grief.

In addition to directing, Whitaker produced the film with David Solomon, with Danielle Beverly serving as field producer. Philip Glass composed its original score.

Whitaker, who previously served as Imagine Entertainment’s president of motion pictures, is also chairman of the Disney-based Whitaker Entertainment and producer of Peter Hedges’ upcoming The Odd Life of Timothy Green.

WME Global’s Liesl Copland and Graham Taylor brokered the sales on behalf of the filmmakers.  Foreign sales are being handled by Shine International.
