Patrick J. Adams Deleted His Social Media Accounts After Posting a Photo With Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal romance is certainly having a ripple effect.

In a new profile for Esquire, Suits actor Patrick J. Adams revealed that it was a bit of a brutal awakening to find that, since his co-star’s relationship with Harry was made public, he now lived “in a world where you can’t post things about Meghan.”

Adams, who previously posted frequently to his Twitter and Instagram profiles, deleted his accounts last month after a photo with Markle — his onscreen love interest and friend of six years — caused a social media hailstorm. The on-set image, which showed the actress (who plays Rachel Zane on the show) giving Adams (who plays Mike Ross) a playful peck on the cheek, was captioned, “Ross and Rachel — the next generation.”

“I had this onslaught of people retweeting the thing, people thinking it was a recent picture, and I just thought, ‘What the hell is going on?’ ” recalled Adams. “It was such an innocent moment of sentimentality that was twisted into something totally different. It made me feel like … why put myself through this? We’re like brother and sister, it’s not like it was lurid or anything, but it just became a story that people wanted to talk about.”

The photo sparked headlines across the pond too, where the Daily Mail ran the headline “Jealous Harry?” above the photo.

Markle herself has been a target of British tabloid scrutiny over the past year, to the extent that Harry issued a statement via Kensington Palace asking the media to leave her and her family alone. According to Markle’s profile for Vanity Fair, however, their relationship is worth the trouble. She explained, “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”
