Oscar’s Hotel for Fantastical Creatures, the first series to emerge from Vimeo’s four-project deal with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer‘s New Form Digital, has revealed its cast.
The fantasy series, an adaptation of YouTube creator P.J. Liguori‘s short film Oscar’s Hotel, stars YouTuber Chris Kendall and features an ensemble cast that includes digital talent Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart and Anna Akana. Lending their voices for the project are Patrick Stewart, Alfred Molina, Elliott Gould and Felix Kjellberg, the YouTuber known as PewDiePie.
Oscar’s Hotel tells the story of a hotel owner who leaves his nephew Oliver (Kendall) in charge of a group of eccentric guests, including Repossession Fish (voiced by Stewart and Molina) and Octochef (Mamrie Hart).
To bring these characters to life, New Form Digital and Vimeo have brought on producing partner Jim Henson Co., which will use puppets, costume pieces and prosthetics from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. “PJ’s original creatures demonstrated a quirky and irreverent style, so it was a fun challenge to create new characters that would naturally fit and populate Oscar’s Hotel,” said Peter Brooke, creative supervisor of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
Liguori first developed the short film concept for Oscar’s Hotel through New Form’s incubator program. Vimeo struck a deal with New Form, the digital entertainment company that Howard and Grazer formed with Discovery Communications last year, to help turn two of the shorts, Liguori’s Oscar’s Hotel and Sawyer Hartman‘s Parallax, into a 10-episode series available exclusively on Vimeo on Demand. The deal also includes two additional unannounced projects.
“PJ Liguori is a very unique storyteller,” said Kathleen Grace, chief creative officer at New Form. “We’re very proud to work with him and this amazing cast, in partnership with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, on Oscar’s Hotel. The series embodies what New Form is all about — building creators’ visions into premium scripted originals.”
Oscar’s Hotel will become available on Vimeo on Demand on Sept. 15.
