Two of Peter Jackson’s companies will be among the honorees at the International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society’s 5th annual 3D Technology Awards. The awards will be presented on Sept. 18 during a ceremony at Paramount Studios.
The Society’s Lumiere statuettes for technology will be awarded to Weta Digital for the visual effects pipeline it created for Avatar; and to Park Road Post for the 3D high frame rate pipeline it developed for The Hobbit.
Relatedly, a Lumiere will also be awarded to manufacturer SGO for its Mistika post-production system, which was a key tool used at Park Road Post for its 3D high frame rate pipeline.
Two 2D-to-3D conversion companies will receive trophies: StereoD, for its CTAC–MAM pipeline; and Legend3D, for its 2D-to-3D conversion pipeline. Honorees also include Germany’s Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, for its TimeLab Omnicam; and Tim Dashwood, for the Stereo3D CAT stereoscopic calibration and analysis software.
Dolby Laboratories will be recognized for the Dolby 3D glasses-free 3D system that it developed in collaboration with Philips; RealD, for its Precision White Screen; and Masterimage 3D, for its CellMatrix 3D technology.
During the ceremony, Regal Cinemas will receive a 3D theater of the year award for L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
The Society will also present a car of the year award to Mercedes-Benz for its 2014 S-Class automobile, which uses a stereoscopic camera safety system. Members of American Optometrists Association, Michael Halkias and Ingryd Lorenzana, will be recognized as “eye care professionals of the year.”
