Phase 4 Films has picked up all U.S. and Canadian rights to director Derick Martini’s Toronto Film Festival entry Hick, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne, Juliette Lewis and Alec Baldwin.
Phase 4 president-CEO Berry Meyerowitz announced the deal with Hick Picture Productions president Charles De Portes. A spring 2012 release is planned.
Based on the book of same name by Andrea Portes, Hick is about a 13-year-old girl (Moretz) who, tired of fending for herself and her mom’s penchant for hard-drinking men, hits the road in hopes of becoming a superstar. Along the way, she meets a drifter with a chip on his shoulder (Redmayne) and a troubled but spirited woman (Lively) who takes the girl under her wing.
“We’ve had Derek Martini on our radar since he entered the scene with his edgy film Lymelife,” Meyerowitz said. “Hick is an amazing, pull no punches adventure and we could not ask for a more talented cast.”
The deal was negotiated by Phase 4 senior vice president of acquistions Larry Greenberg, Cassian Elwes of CAA and Graham Taylor at WME on behalf of the filmmakers.
