Pierce Brosnan has a few thoughts on the next James Bond.
The former 007 frontman isn’t sure who will take over the spy franchise from Daniel Craig after the upcoming Spectre, rumored to be the his last film as the MI5 agent. Could Idris Elba be next in line to play Bond?
“Anything is possible for sure, but I think he’ll be male and he’ll be white,” Brosnan told the Press Association, according to MSN.
“There’s wonderful black actors out there who could be James Bond, and there’s no reason why you cannot have a black James Bond,” he continued while promoting his latest film Lessons in Love with Salma Hayek and Jessica Alba.
However, the Ian Fleming-created character should remain a male, said Brosnan, who played Bond from 1994 to 2005.
“But a female James Bond, no, I think it has to be male. James Bond is a guy, he’s all male. His name is James, his name is James Bond.”
Just a month ago, Brosnan was asked whether he could see the series opting for a gay Bond, and although he himself would be open to the idea, he doesn’t imagine it happening anytime soon.
After initially responding with “Sure. Why not?” to the idea of a gay Bond, Brosnan — who last played the spy character in 2002’s Die Another Day — paused before adding: “Actually, I don’t know how it would work. I don’t think [Bond producer] Barbara [Broccoli] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.”
“Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond,” the star continued, promoting No Escape at the time. “Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”
