After a short teaser and Super Bowl spot, the first full trailer for the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales, debuted exclusively Thursday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and the host’s digital platforms.
The preview features a longer look at the history between Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Javier Bardem’s ghostly villain Captain Salazar.
Salazar and Sparrow are shown in their younger days as Salazar explains via voiceover how he’d “vowed to eliminate” all pirates, seeing them as “infect[ing] the seas for generations.”
“But then there was this boy, Jack Sparrow,” Salazar continues, as viewers get a glimpse of a younger Jack and the shipwreck that seems to have led to Salazar’s death. “He took everything from me and filled me with rage.”
Sparrow is then seen being warned that Salazar is coming for him and trying to recall him, saying, “I once knew a Spaniard named — something in Spanish.”
The rest of the trailer features special effects-heavy action mixed in with quips from Sparrow as Bardem is seen saying, “You will pay for what you did to me.”
The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, hits theaters May 26 and also stars Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites.
