According to producer Alcon Entertainment, China has approved the film for a wide release there on Dec. 3 — an unprecedented three weeks before its U.S. opening.
The movie will be the last Hollywood release in China for 2015, following The Martian‘s bow on Nov. 25 from Fox and The SpongeBob Movie on Dec. 1 from Paramount. Typically, imported movies are blocked from release in China during December and early January, during which time local films are given uncontested reign at China’s box office, now the world’s second-largest movie market.
Chinese co-producer and local distribution partner DMG was likely involved in achieving the late-year release coup. The company co-produced Iron Man 3 in 2013, securing its China release two days before it opened stateside. The only Hollywood film to open further in advance in China was Penguins Of Madagascar, which premiered 12 days early there in 2014.
DMG declined to comment on the release plans for Point Break.
Point Break stars Luke Bracey, replacing Keanu Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah from Kathryn Bigelow’s original 1991 film. Edgar Ramirez will fill Patrick Swayze’s memorable role as Bodhi. Ericson Core directs the remake.
Warner Bros. is releasing the film in international territories including the U.K., Russia, Japan and Latin America, while Lionsgate is bringing it out in the rest of the world.
