Continuing to ramp up its event programming for theaters, Cinedigm Digital Cinema will distribute a new full length feature Pokémon the Movie: White — Victini and Zekrom on the weekend of Dec. 3 and 4 on 375 screens in North America, which the company said is a new record for digital distribution of a children’s special event movie.
The movie targeted at an audience of children and families is being presented by Cinedigm in partnership with The Pokémon Company International.
Among the exhibitors carrying the program are AMC Theatres, National Amusements, Reading Entertainment, UltraStar Cinemas, Carmike Cinemas, Rave Cinemas, and Studio Movie Grill.
“The response from our digital theatre partners around the country has been fantastic,” said Brad Carroll, Vice President of Bookings at Cinedigm Digital Cinema.
A second Pokémon picture, Pokémon the Movie: Black — Victini and Reshiram, will premiere Dec. 10 on cable TV’s the Cartoon Network.
The Pokémon Company International has launched a V for Victini sweepstakes to promote the movies. Info is available at www.pokemon.com/win.
The Pokémon Company International is a subsidiary of The Pokémon Company in Japan, which launched the animated characters in 1996. There have been nearly a dozen movies, as well as 12 seasons of TGV shows, a Trading Card Game, and over 25 video games.
This is the latest in a series of event programs for theaters from Cinedigm, which since Chris McGurk took over at the begging of 2011 has made major changes in its business. While its big revenue source is still converting theaters from film to digital, it has shifted its emphasis toward the software business and delivering specialized content to theaters.
Recent releases include The Foo Fighters in 3D, the live 3D broadcast of the FIFA World Cup Championship, the BCS Championship, the Dave Matthews Band 3D concerts and PHISH concerts. Cinedigm has also run for the past six years the KIDTOONS series in over 165 theatres nationwide.
