‘Rango’ Tops Home Video Sales Charts After Only Two Days

Paramount Pictures’ Rango, about a Wild West chameleon sheriff voiced by Johnny Depp, was the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc for the week ending July 17, even though it was only in stores for two of the five reporting days.

The film, the studio’s first entry into the increasingly competitive field of big-budget digital animation, debuted at No. 1 on both Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall sales chart and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Nearly half of all units sold, or 46%, were of the high-definition disc.

Rango easily outsold two other new theatrical features bowing on disc that week, both of which generated less than half of the animated film’s $123.3 million box office gross.

Lionsgate’s The Lincoln Lawyer, a crime drama with Matthew McConaughey and Marisa Tomei that earned $58 million in theaters, debuted at No. 2 on both sales charts, with 70% as many units sold as Rango.

Sony Pictures’ Insidious, a PG-13-rated horror film with a $53.8 million theatrical gross, bowed at No. 3 on both sales charts, selling just less than half as many units as Rango.

Also new to the sales chart are HBO’s Entourage: The Complete Seventh Season, which debuted at No. 5 on First Alert, and Warner’s Arthur, which bowed at No. 7.

Elsewhere on the sales chart, excitement over the newest Harry Potter film sent three prior films racing back up the charts, while the latest disc release, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, finished the week at No. 4 – again, on both sales charts.

On First Alert, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince rose from No. 14 to No. 6, marking its 20th consecutive week in the top 100.

 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix shot up from No. 21 to No. 12, while Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone rose from No. 31 to No. 20.

On Home Media Magazine‘s rental chart for the week, The Lincoln Lawyer debuted at No. 1 while Rango bowed at No. 2 and Insidiouscame in at No. 3.

Warner’s Hall Pass, which just came off its 28-embargo from Netflix and Redbox, was the week’s No. 4 renter, up from No. 37 the previous week, when it was only available at brick-and-mortar rental stores.
