Wil Wheaton is strapping on his VR goggles and haptic suit. The Star Trek: The Next Generation and Big Bang Theory alum is set to narrate the audiobook for Ready Player Two, author Ernest Cline’s follow-up to Ready Player One. Penguin Random House Audio will debut the audiobook on Nov. 24, the same day Ready Player Two hits print via Penguin.
The Ready Player One audiobook debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times audio fiction bestsellers list when the list launched in March 2018 and spent seven months there. Ready Player One was also the first book to reach No. 1 in print, ebook and audio. It spawned the 2018 film adaptation from Steven Spielberg, with Cline co-writing the screenplay with Zack Penn.
Released in 2011, Ready Player One takes place in 2045, a time in which climate change, overpopulation and poverty have swept the Earth. Much of humanity seeks solace in an online virtual reality called The Oasis, created by 1980s-obsessed genius James Halliday. The plot sees teenager Wade Watts dedicate himself to solving Anorak’s Game, an Oasis-spanning treasure hunt announced after Halliday’s death and which sees the winner get his $500 billion fortune, as well as control of The Oasis.
Wheaton previously narrated the audiobook for Cline’s 2015 novel Armada. Ready Player Two is now available for pre-order in all formats.
