Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has teamed with creature feature writer Max Borenstein for Hypnotic, a sci-fi thriller for Studio 8.
Borenstein, whose credits include Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Godzilla: King of Monsters, will rewrite an original script by Rodriguez, the filmmaker behind the Sin City movies. Rodriguez is attached to direct and produce the project.
Details are being kept secret, but Hypnotic is being described as a grounded cop thriller with sci-fi elements. Studio 8 sees franchise potential with the project.
Studio 8 is prepping its first two releases for later this year: Drama White Boy Rick, starring Matthew McConaughey and directed by Yann Demange, is set to open Aug. 17, while prehistoric adventure movie Alpha, directed by Albert Hughes, will bow Sept. 14.
Rodriguez is currently in postproduction on Alita: Battle Angel, the James Cameron-produced sci-fi thriller starring Rosa Salazar. The pic is set to be released Dec. 21.
Borenstein has one of his old scripts, What Is Life Worth, on the runway to production. Michael Keaton is in negotiations to star, while David Frankel will direct the drama whose rights are being sold at Berlin’s European Film Market.
Rodriguez is with WME; Borenstein is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and lawyer Eric Feig.
