ABC’s Good Morning America unveiled the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story shortly before 8 a.m. ET on Thursday.
The teaser trailer was posted online shortly thereafter and can be watched in full below.
Just a day earlier, Star Wars introduced a new Stormtrooper armor via a brief (10-second long) teaser, announcing that the longer trailer was to follow.
The film, set before the original 1977 Star Wars movie, centers around a group of resistance fighters on a mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star that the Rebels have in the first movie.
The trailer features Jones prominently, shown fighting off a group of Stormtroopers at one point, and offers glimpses of Mendelsohn and Whitaker’s characters.
The rebellious Jones is shown at the beginning of the preview being arrested and charged with “forgery of stolen documents, arson and aggravated assault and resisting arrest.”
When confronted about her “aggressive and undisciplined” nature, Jones responds, “This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.”
She’s then given a mission: “A major weapons test is imminent,” she’s told. “We need to know what it is and how to destroy it.”
The trailer ends with a glimpse of Jones wearing battle gear after Whitaker’s character says, “What will you do if they catch you? What will you do if they break you? If you continue to fight, what will you become?”
Edwards previously said that his film, set after Episode III but before Episode IV (aka the original Star Wars), won’t have clear-cut villains and heroes. It’s also very much a war film, he said.
“It’s about the fact that God’s not coming to save us, and we’re on our own,” said Edwards. “The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to be released Dec. 16.
