The new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story paints a clearer picture of the tone for Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars standalone film. It looks both grittier than the films we’ve seen before and more self-contained (there are no lightsaber battles or promises of a trilogy here).
Debuting during NBC’s Olympics coverage Thursday, the second trailer also gives a better sense of just who this new cast of characters are as they prepare to steal the plans for the Death Star in a story set some time before the first Star Wars movie in 1977.
Below are seven key moments.
0:47-0:51: “You destroyed our home.” It’s not much, but this line of dialogue gives you a pretty good sense about what freelance assassin Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) is all about. The way he delivers it shows such disdain for the Empire — and the way he fires his blaster shows he’s going to be able to do plenty of damage. (Just look at that rocket launcher he fires later at AT-ACT Walker.)
0:52-0:59: “I fear nothing. All is as the Force wills it.” Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), a devout believer in the Force, shows that despite being blind, he has no trouble taking out a bunch of Stormtroopers.
1:00-1:04: “The captain says you are a friend. I will not kill you.” Remember how adorable BB-8 was? And how loveable (if irritating) C-3PO has been for decades? Well, K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) isn’t so warm and cuddly, as his greeting to Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) shows.
1:24-1:30: “He means well.” Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) holds the key to human-android relations, smoothing things over when K-2SO informs the crew they are basically on a fool’s errand with a “97.6 percent chance of failure.”
1:35-1:45 “This is our chance to make a real difference. Are you with me?” Jyn gets to show that she’s the glue that holds this ragtag team of rebels together and is a true leader worthy of the mantle of a Star Wars protagonist.
1:47-1:49: “All the way.” This team looks like soldiers. We’re used to seeing pilots swoop in and help our heroes in final battles, but the Star Wars movies haven’t shown us what a rugged team preparing to launch a covert operation might look like … until now.
1:55-1:56. The mic drop moment.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released Dec. 16.
