Romanian director Cristian Mungiu will preside over the jury that decides the winner of the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival’s Golden Goblet Award, event organizers revealed Friday.
Considered one of the leading lights of the Romanian New Wave, Mungiu burst onto the international scene in 2007 with his second feature, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. The film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, marking the first time the prize was awarded to a Romanian filmmaker. He later won the best screenplay award at Cannes for his 2012 drama Beyond the Hills.
“I have tremendous respect for Asian films, so I am very honored to be invited to join the jury of Shanghai International Film Festival,” said Mungiu.
He added: “While full of expectation for the films to be shown, I do understand, what’s more valuable than the awards is that the film festival provides a non-ignorable, fantastic opportunity for exchange and exploration concerning films and life in general.”
Mungiu served as a member of the Cannes competition jury in 2013.
Founded in 1993, SIFF is China’s most established international film event. Previous jury presidents include Danny Boyle, Luc Besson, Barry Levinson, Tom Hooper, John Woo and Jean-Jacques Annaud.
This year’s film festival is scheduled to run from June 17-26.
Further jury announcements and the festival lineup are expected from SIFF later this spring.
