Ron Livingston has joined Sony’s YA adaptation The 5th Wave.
The film, based on the best-selling novel by Rick Yancey, follows the people of Earth who have endured four waves of increasingly deadly attacks from aliens. Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz), one of a few survivors, is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie meets a young man who may become her final hope.
Livingston will play Moretz’s character’s father, Oliver. He’s an important part of Cassie’s life, and tries his best to protect her during the deadly alien attacks.
J Blakeson is directing the project from a screenplay by Susannah Grant. The film also stars Liev Schreiber, Nick Robinson, Alex Roe and Maika Monroe.
Tobey Maguire, Graham King, Lynn Harris, and Matthew Plouffe are producing, while Denis O’Sullivan and Richard Middleton are executive producing. Andrea Giannetti brought the project to Sony and will oversee for the studio with Hannah Minghella.
The 5th Wave hit shelves in May 2013, spending 21 weeks on The New York Times’ best-sellers list and selling 300,000 hardcover units and 80,000 e-books. The second book in the series, The Infinite Sea, came out Sept. 16 via Penguin’s Putnam Juvenile. A trilogy is planned, which means if the Sony film works, there’s the possibility of a new YA film franchise.
Livingston’s recent films include The Conjuring, Drinking Buddies and Parkland. The actor also has wrapped work on four films: the David Foster Wallace biopic The End of the Tour with Jason Segel, indie Shangri-La Suite, comedy Fresno and Joe Swanberg’s next film Digging for Fire. He’s also attached to star in indie drama Supreme Ruler about a man who campaigns to become the leader of his Buffalo lodge.
Livingston is repped by UTA, Thruline and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
