Getty ImagesUniversal is in negotiations to pick up Rosaline, a comedic and revisionist take on Romeo & Juliet, out of turnaround from Fox 2000.
Shawn Levy is producing via his 21 Laps production shingle and the script is by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the team who wrote (500) Days of Summer and teamed up with Levy on the Sundance hit The Spectacular Now.

Rosaline is set in the classic period of the play and told from the viewpoint of Rosaline, Romeo’s first love, whom he dumps for her cousin, Juliet. The project has been compared to Wicked, the Wizard of Oz-based musical in the sense that it tells a classic story from a different perspective.
The project is based on the novel by Rebecca Serle, When You Were Mine, published in 2012 by Simon Pulse.
The project twice came close to being cast while at Fox 2000, and just last month reports noted Allison Williams, Emilia Clarke, and Dave Franco were being cast to play Rosaline, Juliet and Romeo respectively.
However, studio sources say there are no deals currently in place for the project being inherited.
VP of production Maradith Frenkel and creative executive Chloe Yellin will oversee the project for the studio.
