The year’s most anticipated local release, Ekipazh (Crew), stayed atop the Russian box office for a second consecutive weekend, crushing local and Hollywood competition.
Nikolai Lebedev’s disaster movie, distributed by Central Partnership, grossed $4 million in its second frame for a cume of $14 million.
Crew, a remake of Alexander Mitta’s 1979 movie of the same name, centers on the efforts of the pilots of an international flight to save the passengers following a disaster in a small town in the mountains. The movie features one of Russia’s hottest stars, Danila Kozlovsky.
Disney’s The Jungle Book stayed at No. 2. Jon Favreau’s rendition of the Rudyard Kipling classic took in $825,000 in its fourth outing for a cume of $18.7 million.
Another local release, the animated family comedy Volki i ovtsy: bezumnoye prevrashcheniye (Wolves and Sheep: A Crazy Transition), debuted at No. 3. The pic grossed $773,000, a poor start for a local animated film, but it unfortunately opened on a weekend when Crew and The Jungle Book were in theaters.
The star-studded comedy Mother’s Day bowed in fourth place. The Garry Marshall-helmed movie took in $518,000.
Before I Wake launched at No. 5 with $437,000.
